After honing his skills as an athletic trainer with Memorial Cup champion hockey teams and the Toronto Maple Leafs, Rick Noonan left his Ontario home and came west in 1970 to join the UBC Athletic Department, where he contributed to numerous championships for UBC's football, hockey and basketball teams.

At the same time he remained committed to his duties as head trainer for Canada's national hockey team, eventually resulting in him being appointed general manager of Canada's 1980 Olympic team as well as men's athletic director at UBC. Equipped with business expertise and a lifelong love for the game of hockey, he was later appointed as general manager of both the Thunderbird Winter Sports Centre and the Thunderbirds hockey team.

Among his many contributions, Rick founded and chaired the Thunderbird Hockey Alumni Association's Father Bauer Golf Classic, which over the course of 25 years has raised one million dollars for UBC hockey scholarships.
