An Olympic backstroke competitor in 2000, Kelly Stefanyshyn won five international medals prior to her arrival at UBC in the fall of that year; a silver and bronze in the 1999 World Short Course championships and a gold, silver and bronze in the 1999 Pan American Games. She swam for the Thunderbirds for five seasons, and from 2001 to 2006 won 31 CIS (now U SPORTS) medals – 18 gold, 12 silver and one bronze.
In her 2006 graduating year, she led her team to a ninth consecutive CIS championship and was named 2006 CIS Women’s Swimming Athlete of the Year. She was also named a co-winner of the 2006 Marilyn Pomfret Award as UBC’s Female Athlete of the Year.
