VICTORIA, B.C. – The Canadian World Championship Swimming trials wrapped up Saturday night in Victoria, B.C., with seven current, former, and future Thunderbirds qualifying to represent Canada at the upcoming FINA World Swimming Championships in Barcelona, Spain.
Two-time Olympian and two-time CIS Swimmer of the Year
Savannah King led the way qualifying for three individual events, the 200m freestyle, 400m freestyle, and 800m freestyle. Breaststroke specialist and 2012 Olympian
Tera Van Beilen will race in two events at the worlds, the 100m breaststroke and the 200m breaststroke, winning both events at the trials.
Other current members of the Thunderbirds swim team to qualify for the worlds, include Canada West Swimmer of the Year
Coleman Allen in the 100m butterfly and
Luke Peddie in the 100m freestyle.
Former Thunderbirds and 2012 Olympians
Tommy Gossland and
Martha McCabe will be going to Barcelona. Gossland qualified in the 100m freestyle, while McCabe will swim the 200m breaststroke.
Ottawa's
Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson who has committed to UBC and will attend beginning in September had an outstanding trials, qualifying for the worlds in the 200m individual medley and the 400m individual medley.
The 2013 World Swimming Championships will take place July 19-August 4 in Barcelona, Spain.
